Dornoch

Last Monday, we set off to the far north of Scotland, an area we have not visited before. We would be staying at the Dornoch Hotel in Dornoch.

It is a fairly long drive, and much of it along the A9, the main trunk route North to Inverness and beyond. It carries much traffic, but has many stretches where it is only a single carriageway. It has seen many fatalities. 2 days earlier, 2 lorry drivers had been killed in an early morning head on crash. The road had been closed, meaning a lengthy detour for drivers heading north and south. On our way home we just missed another head on crash involving a van and a coach heading towards a rock festival at Inverness. Both van passengers died.
This road has to be upgraded soon. I take detours off it wherever possible. The road is not fir for the amount of traffic it carries, but impatience, speed and risk taking add to the dangers.

On the way North, we stopped at Stirling for lunch, before completing the rest of the journey, reaching the hotel just about 6 pm.
We would be staying here till Friday, and we were looking forward to our stay. We had a sea view room which was nice. This far North, at this time of the year means it doesn't actually get dark! I have posted a photo taken at 11pm from our room.

The hotel was pleasant, the food was good, and the service was excellent. All the staff tried really hard to make the guests welcome. It was Jubilee week too. So there were some freebies! AJubille paperweight for each guest, a Jubilee afternoon tea with a cup cake, and a speciial 5 course Jubilee meal with free pre drinks. Well done Shearings, well done the hotel chef and all the staff!

The Royal Dornoch Golf links lies between the Hotel and the sea. We took a walk across it to the sea on the first evening.

We had no set itinerary. We would just take each day as it came. We were not disappointed.
