Elections Tomorrow

I took my Mazda along for repair today. It has been making a unusual noise. I had a courtesy car for the day.
So we got to Mass and Benediction today, then a quick visit to the TFP. My wife had a sewing class this afternoon which allowed me some time sitting in the garden doing crosswords.
I gave Glasgow City Council a call to say I was available for supply teaching. They were desperate for supply teachers I was told. I will be out tomorrow, back at my usual school!

My car was ready for collection at 5pm. Turned out to be a wheel bearing. The part was £55, the labour 3 times that amount. But it is working. I did have a look round the car lot, but saw nothing that attracted me.
I like my Mazda, just wish it was a bit more frugal with petrol.

Tomorrow is voting day for Council Elections all around the country. Certainly in Scotland, the Conservatives will not do well, the Lib Dems are going to be decimated, Labour will struggle to hold on to Glasgow, and the Scottish National Party have a great opportunity to make substantial gains.

In such elections, National issues tend to be sidelined by local issues. But this year might be different. There are many National Issues which are likely to have an effect on voting.

There is the financial crisis affecting Britain and Europe. The plight of the Euro, to which Britain did not sign up, has meant that we have been lending money to Europe to support those countries like Greece and Spain who are teetering on the point of collapse due to their debt levels.
Green taxes are having a profound affect on domestic heating and lighting charges for the average family. in my case, despite having energy saving gizmos, I have just been informed that I will now be paying £130 a month for gas and electricity.
The cost of food is spiraling rapidly. manufacturers are reducing the quantities in packets, but prices are staying  the same. A packet of 4 razor blades over £10 now. Basics like bread, milk, eggs and pasta continue to climb.

The cost of fuel to motorists rises relentlessly. Now £5.60 a gallon...nearly $12!

Car insurance is increasing as a result of no win no claim lawyers and sharp practice among Insurance companies. Many drivers have no insurance because of the cost. You know what will happen if one of them hits you!

And then there are the moral issues. Soaring divorce rates. Soaring abortion rates. The push by all parties to re-define what marriage is.
The broken promises of the Conservatives to give tax breaks to married people. Instead, married parents with children are worse of than co-habiting couples.
The Lib Dems do not see Marriage as special or important. Sadly so does the Scottish National Party.
And Christianity is under severe attack from Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems, the Greens and so on.
The right of an individual to follow their conscience is being undermined. 2 Catholic Nurses who objected to being involved in any way with Abortions have been told they have no right to conscientious objection.
There are moves to stop meetings beginning with prayers, or for Crucifixes or crosses to be worn in public.
We don't call it Christmas....it's Winterfest.
I could go on and on.

So I am sure that some of these issues will have a bearing on how people might vote tomorrow. And that is right. It would appear that Britain is at a turning point, where in the interests of equality and civil rights, the Christian Heritage of this country is at risk of being subverted and pushed aside.
The push is on for a society where anything goes, you should be free to follow wherever your passions and desires take you, as long as it is not morality, marriage and decency.
That is one set of beliefs that are not to be tolerated any longer. They want Christianity kept behind the doors of the Church. It has no place in the street.
God save us from such a future.
