Haggerston castle

We have just returned from 5 days at Haggerston Castle. We were staying at a caravan site there.

The weather was not too bad, but it has turned much colder. We even had some sleet on Thursday.

Haggerston is well situated for visiting interesting places in Scotland and England. It is a few miles from Berwick Upon Tweed, very close to the Scottish border.

It has seen much history, much fighting and much bloodshed too. In the wars between England and Scotland, this would not have been a peaceful place to live. There are many castles in the area, and many ruined abbeys too. And Holy Island is 15 mns from the caravan site.

The island is also called Lindisfarne, and the ruins of the abbey founded by St Aidan.

The castles and towns here feature in many historic accounts of the troubled years between England and Scotland. The border often changed and Berwick Upon Tweed, now the first town in England, was once upon a time a Scottish town.

The photos show 3 castles and 1 abbey

1 Warksworth Castle

2 Alnwick Castle

3. Kelso Abbey

4. Norham Castle
